Well, seems you asked 3 questions, play mkv, avi, mp4, think your problem is what video format are supported by Galaxy Tab.
 The specs is it is capable of 1080p HD video playback for all kinds of video formats including XviD, MPEG4 and h.264, and it supports Adobe Flash 10.1, so the video supported is HD, avi(DivX, XviD), mp4(MPEG-4), WMV, H.263, H.264.

The answer to your question is, MKV can't play on it, you have to do converting before watching, AS I go one tool ANEEESOFT what Im using can do converting all kinds of video files for me, so I didn't have any problem on play videos&movies on it, very enjoyable!
